Jordan Shocks World by Forfeiting Basketball Match Against Israel—Here’s Why Everyone’s Talking!

The Jordanian Under-19 basketball team made a significant political statement by refusing to play their scheduled match against Israel at the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup in Lausanne, Switzerland. This decision led to a 20-0 victory for Israel by default. The Jordan Basketball Federation cited the ongoing Gaza conflict as the reason for their withdrawal, aligning with the nation’s longstanding position on the issue.

A Political Statement on the Global Stage

The Jordanian Basketball Federation’s decision was a clear protest against the Israeli military actions in Gaza, which have been ongoing since October 2023. The Federation communicated its stance to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), resulting in the forfeiture of the match. This move underscores Jordan’s commitment to its principles and its position on the Gaza conflict.

Reactions from the International Community

Israeli officials expressed disappointment over Jordan’s decision, emphasizing that sports should serve as a bridge between cultures rather than a platform for political statements. Amos Frishman, president of the Israeli Basketball Federation, stated that such actions undermine the unifying power of sports.

The international community has witnessed similar protests in other sports. In April 2025, members of Switzerland’s fencing team turned their backs on the Israeli team during a medal ceremony at the Under-23 European Fencing Championship in Tallinn, Estonia, in protest of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Jordan’s Position on Sports and Politics

Jordan has a history of aligning its sports policies with its political stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The nation’s decision to forfeit the match reflects its broader approach to avoid “sports normalization” with Israel amid the ongoing war.

Despite the forfeiture, Jordan remains active in the tournament. The team is scheduled to face Switzerland on July 1, 2025, in their final group-stage match. Having lost their opening game to the Dominican Republic, the Jordanian team will aim to conclude their participation on a positive note.

This incident highlights the intersection of sports and politics, demonstrating how athletic platforms can become arenas for political expression. Jordan’s decision serves as a reminder of the power of sports to reflect and influence global political landscapes.

Amos Frishman, president of the Israeli Basketball Federation, expressed regret at Jordan’s decision.

“I strongly believe that sport is a bridge between people and cultures and not a political arena,” he was quoted by local media as saying.
